Kieran's 70th Birthday at Hampton RSL
Seventy years old and still the life of the party — that was the brief for Kieran's birthday celebration at Hampton RSL, and honestly, it was one of our favourite Bayside functions this year.
Kieran's family booked out the function room for a Saturday night, and they wanted the space to feel properly festive the moment guests walked in — not a single sad balloon in sight, and definitely no half-hearted decorating job. So we went with a classic, sophisticated gold and black colour palette, the kind that says "milestone birthday" without tipping into over-the-top balloon overload.
The centrepiece was a giant gold number 70 bouquet, anchored near the entrance so it was the first thing guests saw walking in from the members bar. We paired it with a matching black and gold garland along the back wall of the function room, framing the spot where Kieran's family had set up the photo area — because at a 70th, you want photo opportunities everywhere, not just at one table.
For the tables themselves, we kept things simpler: small balloon centrepieces in the same gold and black tones, low enough that guests could actually see each other across the table (a small detail, but one that makes a real difference at a sit-down function). A few clusters of black and gold balloons were dotted around the bar area too, so the celebration spilled out beyond just the function room.
The team at Hampton RSL were, as always, brilliant to work with — the function room was set up and ready well before our delivery window, which made the whole install smooth and stress-free. We had everything in place with plenty of time before the first guests arrived, including Kieran's usual suspects from the bowls club, who we're told put on quite the show on the dance floor later that night.
Kieran's family told us afterwards that the room "looked like a proper party" the second they walked in — which, for us, is exactly the goal. A 70th birthday deserves more than a few balloons taped to a doorway. It deserves a room that feels like a celebration before the first drink is even poured.
